Magic Mirror Meditation

Inner work, which some call shadow work, is a necessary part of our duty to become better people throughout our lifetime. It’s always wonderful to have a trusted friend or professional to help you do inner work, but sometimes you just have to go on your own.

This meditation is one I have used for decades now, A simpler version is in my book Magickal Connections: Creating a Lasting and Healthy Spiritual Group. (Link goes to a bookshop.org page where you can order it.) It uses a variety of gentle imagery to access past or different lives you have experienced. We can learn a lot from how we moved through a different life. We can see patterns and reactions that are relevant to current modes and actions.

It’s best to record this meditation and play it to yourself. You may also want to play relaxing music in the background. Set aside about forty minutes to do the whole meditation. Take the first ten minutes to deeply relax. During the meditation, pause after each question and command to give your subconscious mind enough time to respond.

Go to your sacred space, whether physical or virtual. Relax into a comfortable position, either lying down or sitting, and close your eyes.

Breathe deeply and allow yourself to melt into a feeling of peace. Do a total body relaxation exercise. Visualize being enveloped in a protective cocoon of white light. Allow your conscious mind to drift and float off.

Then imagine you’re riding in a limousine, moving through space and time, to another lifetime. The limousine comes to a stop at a major movie studio. The driver opens the door and helps you out.

You enter the studio through a huge door and walk down, down, down many steps to a long corridor. A beautiful woman greets you. She escorts you down, down, down more steps into another long corridor and into a room filled with costumes. She tells you to look through them all and find one that appeals to you.

When you find the costume you want, she invites you to try it on. Look in the dressing room mirror and study the costume that you’re wearing. What is it? What kind of fabric is it made from? What time period is it from? Are you a man or a woman? What color is your skin? What country are you in? What feelings, thoughts, and sensations come to you as you stand there in this costume?

Go to an important incident in this lifetime. See it happening in the mirror. What are you experiencing? Trust your impressions. Receive the information in a way that’s easy and comfortable for you. What’s the outcome of the incident you see?

Now go to your time of passing. View it in a way that’s easy and comfortable. How did you die?

Now look into the mirror and scan that whole life, as if watching a movie on a television screen. Take note of anything you notice, any images, thoughts, or feelings that arise. What spiritual lesson did you learn from that lifetime?

Release the sensation now into the clear light of universal love. Fill your whole body with white light. Imagine this light shining down on your face. On your neck, on your torso, and all the way within you. Feel the light giving every cell of your body permission to function in perfect health. You are healing on all levels—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

In just a few minutes, it will be time to return to your waking state. Mentally count from one to five. On the count of five, you’ll be wide awake, and you’ll remember all that you experienced.

One, coming up, get a sense of your environment. Two, coming up. Three, begin to feel your body. Four, wiggle your fingers and toes. Stretch. Five, wide awake, feeling good. Open your eyes and feel wide awake, better than before.

When you are ready, get your journal and write about this experience. Allow your thoughts to flow gently into your pen and onto the page. Trust your experience as you answer these questions:

  • Did you recognize the beautiful woman who guided you?
  • Did she shape-shift into something else? If so, what?
  • What type of costume did you try on?
  • What type of fabric was it made from?
  • What time period was it from?
  • Were you a man or a woman?
  • What color was your skin?
  • What was the year or time period?
  • What country were you in?
  • What important incident did you experience?
  • What was the outcome?
  • How did you die?
  • What feelings, thoughts, and images did you experience while wearing your costume?
  • What spiritual lesson did you learn?
  • Did you have any body sensations or pain? If so, what?
  • What image did you use to transform it?
  • How does this information or story apply to your present life?

As always, capture this information so that you can review it again in the future.
